The World of Zenith Hall

"What is written on the skin cannot be easily erased."

Cosmology & Registry Terms

Decoded definitions from the school’s restricted archives and the private diaries of Astra Verita.

The Mark

A bond-line carried in the body from birth. The Council reads Marks through water basins and records whether they have settled into an approved shape.

The Pull

The involuntary response of one Mark to another. Felt in the body as a sensory signature—taste, scent, temperature, pressure, or pain. The Pull is not chosen.

Bond

A completed answer between two Marks. The Council prefers a single, recordable bond. An Untethered Mark may answer more than one Mark.

The Untethered

The Council's current word for a Mark that resists being settled into one approved bond. The school teaches that Untethered Marks are almost impossible; the hidden records suggest otherwise.

Star-Marked

The old word for a woman with multiple bonds present in her Mark—a title people have protected with their teeth.

The Bedrock

A man's certainty in himself. The architecture that holds a Mark in place. Caspian Ashford's bedrock is deep—but even stone can crack.

Suppression

The act of holding a Mark down by force of will, training, fear, or protocol. Jonah Hale was taught suppression as inheritance and discipline.

Convergence

The Council's formal bonding ceremony at the alignment formal. The room asks a question, records an answer, and lets witnesses decide what they saw.

Article Seven

The Council's escalation protocol for an Untethered Mark it cannot stabilize into an approved record. In Astra's cycle, Article Seven sends the named Marks to Zenith Tower.

Zenith Tower

The Council's review seat beyond Zenith Hall's authority. No road reaches it. The school sends what it cannot resolve there.

Dimming

The visible loss of a Mark's color during a public reading. A student who Dims is escorted through the west door.

The Basin

A water instrument used for readings, summonses, witness records, and Council procedure. Some basins belong to rooms; some rooms belong to basins.

Zenith Hall, Day Nine

Lior,

I am writing this because they tell me I am out of time. They talk of a 'quiet transfer' and 'completion' as if they are merely cleaning a room, but I know better now.

Do not trust the village Oracle when he tells you your Mark will settle. He was wrong about me, and he will be wrong about you too.

If they summon you to Zenith Hall, do not enter the west door. Remember the words they use, and the order they use them in. Remember the names. The doors. Lior, remember everything.

I am thinking of you, Lior. I want you to know the truth before it is too late. Keep your lines hidden.

With all my love,
Delphine
